The Michael J. Hagan Arena of Saint Joseph's University is SJU's home court for Men's and Women's basketball. Located on the school's campus in Philadelphia, Pa., the arena underwent significant renovations to increase its size and capacity. The new arena seats 4,200 and includes a concourse, offices and locker rooms, a Hall of Fame room, study rooms, basketball center, and practice facilities. Vistacom Inc worked with RJC Designs to engineer and install an audio system which would provide clear, intelligible sound no matter where a fan was seated in the venue.
The audio system was designed utilizing a zoned-approach for the distributed audio clusters and the bleacher systems. Community's Solution Series was chosen for the installation. The Series is designed specifically for challenging environments with a lot of ambient sound, such as a basketball arena. The configuration includes SLS920 speakers and VLF212BI subwoofers, which are used to cover the arena's new and existing areas. The upper end-zone seating is covered by Community's iBOX i2W8. The iBOX i2W8 loudspeaker is a two-way, full- range loudspeaker system designed to provide high quality music and voice reproduction in applications requiring smooth, ultra-wide, horizontal coverage.
"The result delivers excellent intelligibility and great fidelity," stated Mike Parry, senior engineer at Vistacom. In order to be ready for the first men's basketball game following the installation the project required a high degree of team work and communication between Saint Joseph's University's athletic department, facilities department, media and informational technology departments, the project architects and the builder. "The end result was a really great sound system and a very happy client," stated Parry. "No matter where you are in the arena, you are going to hear a great game."
